During this visit we explored the “other” side of the refuge. It is about 5 miles southeast of the visitor’s center (map below). On the way to the Cattail Pond Parking lot, there is a stretch of power lines. All of the trails were closed so we had to walk along the street and this side of the refuge is great for this. We passed by Cattail Pond, Bailey Marsh, and over the Little Patuxent River. Most of the summer greenery is gone and the forest has returned to its desolate state which I sort of prefer for my photography. Though I love the flowers in the summer.
