29 Days in South Carolina: Smith Steifle Store, Bradley, SC

Bradley, SC

During my childhood, I spent the summers in Bradley, SC with my grandparents. We use to ride our bikes up and down the road, around the house, around my great-grandmother’s yard, or down to my cousin’s house. Later we road minibikes. But my brothers and cousins did that more than I. It was such an innocent time.

Bradley is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Greenwood CountySouth Carolina, United States. The population was 170 at the 2010 census.[3]

Smith Steifle Store

Occasionally my grandfather use to take us to the Smith Steifle Store. It was beside the Bradley Post Office and the Thomas Steifle store.  I believe that Thomas and Smith were brothers. The store had groceries and other things that I don’t remember in it. The thing that I do remember was that it smelled like bananas or banana candy and wooden floors. My memory has faded but I do remember the owner being very pleasant. I believe that the exposure to this type of general store gas station is what stirs something in me when we travel to a small town. If there is any sign of wood on the exterior or older wood flooring on the floor, I am happy. I was very lucky to have that north south childhood and will always be grateful for it. When I was in SC back in October I got a chance to take pictures of the store. If you have more information, please let me know.
